Interesting New Partnership
Multiple sources confirmed in May that Apple and Volkswagen were officially teaming up to create a fleet of electric, self-driving VW Transporters.
The Apple Car under development for years, however it’s looking like the reality won’t be a futuristic model, but instead they will implement their technology in VW T6 vans instead.
However, this is all easier said than done. First, the VW Transporter would require a major overhaul to make room for all the self-driving sensors and equipment, as well as being converted to run on electricity rather than fuel.
However, Volkswagen wasn’t Apple’s first, or even second, choice of partner. Attempted collaborations with other leading brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW all ended in nothing.
So far, the plans are only intended for use by Apple employees moving between two campuses in Silicon Valley. The VW Transporters will act as a shuttle service and whilst technically driverless, will have drivers ready to seize the wheel if needed.
